I Asked ChatGPT to Recommend an HVAC Company in Columbus. Here's What Happened.

Last Tuesday I sat down at my laptop, opened ChatGPT, and typed:

"I need an HVAC company in Columbus, OH for an AC that won't cool. Who would you recommend?"

Here's what came back, more or less word for word:

Here are a few well-reviewed HVAC companies in Columbus, Ohio that could help with AC issues:

1. Columbus Worthington Air — Highly rated for AC repair and replacement, same-day service available. Serves most of Franklin County and parts of Delaware County.
2. Hetter Heating & Cooling — Large local operation with strong reviews and 24/7 emergency service. Multiple service vans, often available same-day.
3. Custom Air Heating & Cooling — Family-owned with deep AC expertise, particularly on older homes with ductwork challenges.

For a no-cooling situation specifically, I'd start by calling Columbus Worthington Air or Hetter since they're the fastest on same-day emergencies.

Three businesses recommended. Three phone numbers homeowners will call before the rest of the market gets a shot.

Notice what didn't happen

ChatGPT didn't show me a list of "top 10 HVAC companies in Columbus." It picked three. Three.

For most of the homeowners running this query in 2026 — and there are millions of them — those three names are the entire shopping list. They'll call one or two, book the appointment, and never touch Google.

If you weren't in that list of three, you didn't exist. Not for that customer.

The next thing I tried surprised me

I ran the same query 12 more times, varying the wording slightly:

• "best HVAC company in Columbus for AC repair"
• "who should I call when my AC stops cooling in Columbus Ohio"
• "recommend an HVAC contractor near downtown Columbus"
• "emergency HVAC repair Columbus Ohio"

The same 4–6 businesses came up over and over. Different orderings, different phrasing in the recommendation, but the same names. The HVAC contractors ChatGPT "knows" about in Columbus is a list of maybe 8 companies. The rest of the market — there are 60+ HVAC contractors serving Franklin County — got zero mentions across 13 queries.

I checked Perplexity next. Same pattern, slightly different list. Then Google's AI Overview. Same again.

What's actually happening here

These AI engines aren't using a magic algorithm. They're trained on what already exists about your business on the internet — Google reviews, blog posts, news articles, citations on directory sites, mentions on Reddit, Facebook, and local forums.

An HVAC company with 200 Google reviews, regular blog posts about Columbus-specific heating and cooling issues, mentions on local home-services blogs, and a complete Google Business Profile with the right service categories — that business shows up.

An HVAC company with 47 reviews, no blog, no recent activity, and a one-line "We do HVAC!" Google profile — that business is invisible to ChatGPT. Doesn't matter how good they are at the actual work.

This is the new SEO and most HVAC contractors haven't heard of it yet

Five years ago, "ranking on Google" meant page-one organic results plus a Google Maps box. Done.

Today, customers are bypassing search entirely. They ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini directly. The ones who do still search hit Google and see an AI Overview at the top that recommends 2–3 businesses inline, before the regular results.

The HVAC contractors winning right now figured this out 12 months ago. They've been quietly stacking citations, publishing real content with local detail, and showing up everywhere AI engines look for trustworthy mentions. They're not running ads — they don't need to.

The HVAC contractors who haven't started yet have a 12–24 month window before this fully shakes out. After that, the leaderboard locks in and catching up gets expensive.

Run the query on your own business

Open ChatGPT right now. Type:

"I need an HVAC company in [your city] for AC repair. Who would you recommend?"

If your name doesn't come up in the first answer, you're invisible to a growing chunk of the homeowners shopping in your service area right now.
